Our very own cloth bum mum Fiona gives the FuzziBunz One Size Elite Nappy a thorough work-out on with her two fluffy bottomed boys – we see how she gets on…
I am a cloth bum mum and proud - with two little boys close in age the cost of buying and throwing away two babies worth of disposable nappies was breaking my heart…and my bank balance. So, I switched to cloth, unfortunately it hasn’t quite gone to plan, as I have become totally addicted to buying different styles, designs and types to try out – I think my bank balance might actually be worse off now than it was before!
With all this fluffy nappy love in mind and my addiction raging out of control I was very excited to find out I would be reviewing some FuzziBunz Elite One Size Cloth Nappies, as a self confessed fluffaholic I was ashamed to admit that this was one brand that I hadn’t tried out myself yet, so was eager to see how they’d measure up compared to all the rest.
First impressions were really good, an easy to use pocket style nappy, with a popper closure and a nice range of bright colours – these nappies are ‘one size’ which means you can adjust them to fit your child all the way from birth to potty training if you wish (although 30lbs is about their limit). Each nappy comes with two different sized inserts so you can easily tailor the absorbency to suit your child, along with some spare elastic which you can use to give them a makeover ensuring they will last through many years and children’s worth of use.
One thing that immediately sets FuzziBunz one size apart from its competitors is the way the size adjusts. Most ‘one size’ nappies have poppers on the front of the nappy that lengthens or shortens the rise (how long the nappy is front to back). The FuzziBunz have a system that adjusts inside the nappy to shorten the length of the leg elastic on either leg, and also on the back elastic to shorten the waist. This is done with a button and buttonhole in the elastic (neatly hidden away inside the pocket), with numbers next to it to give you an idea of adjustment. You have to look the numbers up on the label (or online) initially to see what might suit – but once you get into the swing of it you can make your own little adjustments to suit your own child’s size and shape. My little boys share nappies and it is fiddly to keep adjusting on a regular basis so I split colours and kept them adjusted to fit each boy separately.
It quickly became clear that this style of size adjustment has certain advantages over the other style. My youngest son is at an awkward stage where he is almost between settings on standard front adjustable nappies, and I am getting a few leaks around his legs – with the FuzziBunz there are a lot more adjustments available and I was able to shorten the nappy easily without the leg becoming bunched and gaping – there were no leaks! The elastic at the back is easy to adjust also – and the fact that you can do that in addition to altering the tightness of the fastening at the front using the three snaps gives you a great range of options to accommodate loads of different sized bottys at loads of different stages of their development! For a newborn baby you don’t end up with a bulky mass of nappy at the front from folding it right down – you can smooth the nappy out through their legs and use the smaller insert to get a trim fit.
The inner fleece is lovely and softy and after numerous washes we’re still stain free – and the fleece surface still looks brand new with no pilling. The waterproof outer is super soft and smooth – no chance of any chaffing between sweaty thighs. Not too bulky on compared to a lot of other brands, and the cut between the legs is very trim, lovely and narrow to give plenty of leg freedom. The inserts on this nappy are made from Minky, which I was really impressed with – I found them a good halfway house between microfibre and bamboo – they were more absorbent and lasted better than microfibre, but were much quicker drying and softer than bamboo.
My eldest is getting to the end of his nappy wearing years now, and is beginning to outgrow some styles now, so it was with trepidation I attempted to squeeze him into the FuzziBunz with all settings set to max… what a pleasant surprise! He fits …just…and I don’t think it’ll be for too much longer – he’s a fairly hefty lad though and right at the top of the weight range for this nappy so I’m not too disgruntled!
Neither of my boys are epic wee’ers, and I found absorbency was adequate for them both, with no leaks once I had the fit correctly adjusted (though this did take a fair bit of tweaking). Both boosters were required to get a decent stretch of time though, making trousers even harder to squeeze over the top. The narrowness of the cut between the legs also made them a little tricky to stuff (especially for a fat handed daddy – who gave up!).
I also must mention the changing matt – this is truly lovely and I would happily leave my newborn on it for a good kick happy they were comfy and any wee would be contained! Made from the same outer and inner as the nappies – it was all I could do but stop myself curling up on it myself for a snuggle!
All in all you’ll be pleased to know these nappies made the grade! My ‘everyday stash’ is a hard one for a new nappy to break into but I’ve kept on reaching for these on a regular basis – especially for my youngest. So would I buy them? Yes! They’re not too pricey compared to others, good design, good quality, and well thought out with the extras like the spare elastic, if you were looking to buy some nappies to last you all the way through (and were hoping to potty train sooner than we have!) these would be perfect!
