Extreme sports infuencing pushchair design
When was the last time you looked at a parachute and thought, you know what, I think that would make an excellent seat for a pushchair? Never? Well me neither!
That didn’t stop Quinny’s designers looking to the sky, and the skatepark for that matter, when they designed the Yezz stroller.
When you’re designing a stroller that’s tough enough for travel and adventure, you need a combination of light weight and manoeuvrability.
The Yezz designers took three key ingredients taken from extreme sports - and a little bit of clever engineering – and built them right into the Yezz’s design.
Firstly, the Quinny Yezz has inline skate wheels with high-quality ball races. Why? Well, these wheels have very hard ‘tyres’ giving the Yezz an incredibly smooth ride on hard surfaces. The ball races ensure there is virtually no friction when you push the Yezz, and definitely no squeaky wheels. Take the Yezz to an airport and you’ll find yourself zooming around the concourse – it really is incredibly easy to push.
Secondly, the seat from the Yezz is made from ripstop fabric, the kind that is used for hang glider sails, parachutes and hot air balloons. It’s super strong and almost impossible to rip or tear. It will stand up to the abuse a stroller of this type will be given with no problem at all.
Thirdly, the seat is held on to the frame with climbing rope. Apart from having funky looks, the rope has a real purpose: it can hold up to 200kgs! You could stand three fully grown men on it and it wouldn’t break.
Finally, the chassis is made from IXEF® fibreglass composite. The tension from the ripstop seat and the climbing rope stresses the chassis to form the Yezz’s unique design.
The Yezz is a great, funky stroller. You don’t just need to take our word for it either - the Quinny Yezz has won a number of design awards including the iF Product Design Award, Red Dot Best of Best Award, ESEF Engineering Award for most innovative use of materials, and ESEF Engineering Award Most Favourite Product (as voted for by the trade show visitors). Plus it won Gold in our 2013 Best Baby and Toddler Gear Awards for Travel Stroller.
